GO Public Schools in the Community: Empowerment Institute’s Workshop On Civil Rights

The Central Labor Council, in partnership with the Fresno City College Social Justice Center and SCFT 1533, hosted a powerful workshop on organizing and the ongoing fight for equity in America. This convening brought together over 100 community members eager to learn, connect, and align around a shared vision for change.

The workshop featured Fresno City College history professor Paul Gilmore, who provided deep insights into the struggles, successes, and pivotal moments that have shaped workers’ rights and advocacy today. Attendees engaged in meaningful discussions on collective impact, reflecting on how past movements inform present-day organizing. The session left the community with a thought-provoking question: What are you willing to do today?

The event also highlighted the launch of the Empowerment Institute, a new initiative that integrates action and social wellness into year-round workshops. The Empowerment Institute offers a free curriculum for residents interested in becoming more active in their communities, with monthly workshops designed for various levels of activism and leadership.

At GO Public Schools we are excited to participate and witness action in the valley. The gathering was a testament to the community’s resilience and commitment to equity, fostering a sense of hope. It was a powerful reminder that real change happens when we come together, learn from our history, and take action in the present.
