Public Education in Fresno

Fresno public schools are home to approximately 74,000 students. And, like many communities throughout California, the situation in our schools is dire.

74,000

Students Throughout California

Currently, 1 in 4 of our students meet or exceed standards in mathematics, and 1 and 3 are on level in English Language Arts.

These statistics are worse for our students of color, English Learners, and those eligible for free and reduced lunch. Every year that passes – where we do not see growth in student achievement – is another 180 days of missed opportunities. Our young people and families deserve more, and there is no time to waste.

Parents Driving Change at the State

At 6:30am on May 1, GO Fresno Family Leaders expectantly loaded on to a bus at the GO Fresno offices. The atmosphere was electric, full of hope and anticipation for the day ahead. That bus was headed for the State Capitol – and family leaders were well-prepared for a full day of advocacy and legislative meetings. For many of our Family Leaders this would be their first time visiting the capitol, and for GO Fresno, our first opportunity to join forces with other GO Family Leader groups in other regions to advocate for statewide policy changes.

This trip was especially meaningful for GO Fresno because we had recently graduated our fourth cohort of Family Leaders, many of whom joined us in the State Capitol. We are incredibly proud of their initiative and commitment to translate their learning into action. On the way back home, the family leaders shared with us how empowered they felt as they confidently expressed their thoughts about educational policy to decision makers. After this transformative experience, family leaders left energized and excited to continue the work of educational advocacy and invite more families to join them.
