As we have partnered with local families, we have many stories about how a lack of college-preparedness has affected their child’s ability to succeed after high school. GO Fresno believes that every child in Fresno deserves to graduate prepared to succeed in both college and career and for that to happen, Fresno Unified must expand access to early college credit options for all student groups.
Research shows that early college credit opportunities have proven to increase a student’s likelihood to graduate from high school, and subsequently, matriculate and complete college in a timely manner. Additionally, early college course offerings give students the opportunity to survey careers
In 2018, FUSD graduated about 98% of its seniors, but only fewer than half where classified as ready for college or career. These numbers were significantly worse for vulnerable student groups:
About half of Fresno graduates have all of the required courses they need to be eligible for admission to a UC or CSU. At individual comprehensive high schools in Fresno, A-G completion rates range from 14% to 87%.
A significant bright spot in the district is FUSD’s Design Science High School which offers students the opportunity to concurrently enroll in Fresno City College. 98% of their students graduate, 88% meet A-G requirements, and 90% of students enroll in a post-secondary institution.
Every student in Fresno deserves to see themselves as college-capable and make informed choices about their future.
