At GO Public Schools, our Family Leadership Program (FLP) creates an empowering space for parents to address educational disparities and advocate for positive changes in their children’s education. Through this program, families gain a deeper understanding of school systems and policies, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to become confident and impactful advocates in their communities. Through interactive sessions and relationship-building opportunities, families are brought together by storytelling and a shared passion for a brighter future.
Supporting Families: FLP and Reading and Beyond
Each new FLP cohort begins with an orientation, where families from diverse backgrounds gather to share their aspirations, as well as the challenges they face. This initial meeting is crucial, as it helps to build a safe, welcoming space where parents can voice their hopes and concerns openly. Our recent in-person FLP, in partnership with Reading and Beyond, was no exception. Parents spoke passionately, often reflecting on their personal journeys and struggles, which fostered an empowering atmosphere of support and collaboration.
Throughout the program, parents learned, reflected, and grew, gaining both insights and confidence in their ability to advocate for their children. After each session, they became more aware of their own power and potential, ready to take ownership of their advocacy efforts. Witnessing these moments of empowerment—where families start to see themselves as vital stakeholders in their children’s education—is the core of our work.
Building a Community of Advocates
By the end of the program, we see a significant shift in families: they move from recognizing issues to developing actionable plans. With each step, parents turn their goals into concrete strategies, charting a pathway toward lasting change. FLP isn’t just about providing information; it’s about creating spaces where families feel seen, heard, and valued. These connections strengthen not only individual journeys but also our entire school community, empowering a network of families who work together for a better future.
