From September 19th to 22nd, the San Joaquin Valley Black Expo celebrated and empowered African American culture, values, and contributions. Founded by Dr. Henry Hendrix and Mr. Vurdell Newsome, the Expo is committed to creating opportunities through vocational training and community engagement. This year, GO Public Schools Fresno staff engaged in one of the event’s five key pillars – Education & Youth Development.
Each pillar – Agri-business & Consumer Affairs, Education & Youth Development, Civil, Civic & Faith-based Initiatives, Economic Development & Enterprise, and Health & Environmental Security – each featured workshops and discussions focused on fostering community-driven solutions and inspiring meaningful change. A highlight of this year’s Education pillar was the collaboration with the Black Student Union (BSU) teachers from Central Unified, who ensured that over 100 students participated. These students were given access to enriching experiences that emphasized four critical areas: Literacy, Advocacy, Generational Engagement, and Higher Education Preparation.
The discussions on Higher Education Preparation stressed the importance of building strong academic foundations early. Families were encouraged to support their students’ educational journeys, paving the way for college readiness and lifelong success. Additionally, GO Public Schools Fresno staff also connected with Dr. Veena Howard, Chir of the Philosophy Department at Fresno State, whose interest in continuing to connect minority students with academic opportunities aligns seamlessly with the Expo’s goals. This partnership underscores GO’s mission to extend educational impact beyond events and programs, opening the door for future collaborations that empower youth.
Through these efforts, the San Joaquin Valley Black Expo remains dedicated to equipping African American youth with the skills and support they need to succeed, fostering a community that promotes learning, leadership, and lasting impact.
