On August 17th, the GO Public Schools Fresno team was honored to attend the State of Black California Community Event in Fresno, organized by the California Black Freedom Fund and the California Legislative Black Caucus. It was a powerful gathering where our community came together to discuss the pressing issues facing Fresno and the state as a whole, working towards alignment and building collective power.
Assemblymember Dr. Corey Jackson of the 60th District delivered a moving presentation that resonated with everyone in the room. He spoke from the heart about the plight and deep challenges Black residents in Fresno face every day and emphasized the importance of the recently introduced reparations legislative package. Assemblymember Jackson’s message was clear: now is the time for action, advocacy, and holding systems accountable for real change.
Another key takeaway from the event was the emphasis on building better pathways for leadership opportunities and uplifting the lived experiences of Black families. Those in attendance received key data about the current state of the Black community, which sparked conversations on how to stay actively involved and drive meaningful, grassroots change.
Our team left feeling optimistic and uplifted by the connections we made and the stories we heard. The renewed belief that collective action can shift what is possible highlights the power of community organizing to bring us together as we move forward in our work.
