There’s an old saying that “it takes a village” – an African proverb that reminds us how children thrive when surrounded by a supportive community. This idea resonates more than ever today. By embracing wraparound approaches that address the needs of the entire family, we can amplify the unique gifts and talents within our community. These resources empower families to take charge of their own success stories. This is the approach we witness daily in the South Valley.
This month, our GO South Valley team had the privilege of speaking to a group of educators at Kirk Elementary who have taken ownership of their community by elevating the needs and voices of their students and families. Kirk Elementary School stands out as a prime example, ranking among the top schools in Fresno Unified School District in three out of the four categories in our Gaining Ground Fresno 2024 i-Ready report.
During our presentation, we saw the pride in our educators’ faces as they were celebrated for their achievements and recognized in our report. We asked them, “What are you doing in your classrooms to empower students and their families to engage in meaningful conversations that support learning?”Their responses highlighted the intentional efforts of leadership to create interactive learning environments, use in-depth data discussions to guide their strategies, and implement communication methods tailored to each student’s needs. Everyone is taking ownership of their role in meeting and exceeding this year’s goals, laying down stepping stones for the educational journeys of our students.
